When the game first starts you'll be
prompted to enter in the time. Gold
and Silver have real-time functions
installed allowing you to emulate
the current time - it's your best
interest to input the proper times.
You'll get an introduction, and the
chance to name yourself, and then
you'll be transported to your room.
Head down the stairs and you'll be
greeted by your Mom, who will give
you your Pokegear (A useful device
that has a World Map, Radio and
Telephone function), and will ask
you to set the day. This too is
important, as certain events take
place on certain days. Head out the
door and to Professor Elm's lab next
door. He'll send you on an errand,
and will give you a Pokemon to
accompany you.

have some very
good moveset
flexibility, with
the ability to
learn moves like

Later on, you'll come across your
rival, who will pick the Pokemon that
has an advantage over the Pokemon
you picked. If you picked Chikorita,
he'll pick Cyndaquil. If you picked
Cyndaquil, he'll pick Totodile. If you
picked Totodile, he'll pick Chikorita.
Leave the lab (You'll get a Potion
from Elm's Aide) and head west.

Elm's Errand
-----------------

Simply follow the path west. Wild
Pokemon appear in the long grass,
so if you don't want to battle them,
just avoid it. Near the entrace to
Cherrygrove City is a man standing
next to a plant - examine the plant
and you'll receive a Berry. Plants
like these hold different kinds of
berries so be sure to pick them up
when you see one. Another berry
will become available the next day if
you want more. Moreover, you can
give berries to your Pokemon to
hold. The berry will automatically be
used if it can (eg, Gold Berry
triggers when HP is below 1/2).
Talk to the man at the entrance.
He'll give you a tour, and also the
World Map card allowing you to see
where you are by accessing your
Pokegear. Rest up at the Pokemon
Center, buy any items from the
PokeMart. Head north onto Route 30.


In the first house you see, talk to
the man inside to get a Berry. Just
continue east and north until you
reach another house - Mr Pokemon's
house. You'll receive a Mystery Egg,
as well as your Pokedex. Have a rest,
then head outside. You'll get an
urgent call from Prof Elm, so head
back to New Bark Town. Upon
leaving Cherrygrove City, your rival
(Named ? at the moment) will
attack. His Pokemon is at level 5 and
doesn't know any special moves yet,
so just keep attacking him. I hope
your Pokemon is holding a Berry!

The Quest Begins
-----------------------

At Elm's Lab, you'll get to name your
Rival. Elm will set you off on your
journey, and his Aide will give you 5
Pokeballs for starters. Go see your
Mom, and she'll offer to store money
for you. Opt to do so, because you'll
get some nice items when you
deposit some money with her. And
upon exiting New Bark Town, you'll
get the option to see a tutorial on
catching Pokemon. In any case, head
up the ledge and get the Potion at
the top-right corner (Walk through
the grass). If it's Tuesday, Tuscany
will be around here to give you a
Pink Bow, which increases the power
of Normal type moves by 10%.
Head back towards Mr Pokemon's
house, and you'll notice that the two
trainers who were blocking the path
aren't battling anymore. If you
appear in their line of sight, they'll
battle you. Head north and you'll
come across a dark cave. Ignore it
for now, but pick up the Antidote
and Pokeball nearby. Continue west
to Violet City.

Violet City
----------------

There are two places of interest
here; firstly the Gym, where you can
earn your first badge, and secondly
Sprout Tower to the north. If you
have an unwanted Bellsprout, you
can trade it for an Onix with a boy
in the house south-west of the
Pokemon Center. If you think you
need to level up your Pokemon a bit
more, Sprout Tower is a good place,
otherwise head to the Gym.


The path to the top is
straightforward - there are just a lot
of trainers to contend with. They all
have Bellsprouts, so Cyndaquil
should be able to take care of them
very easily. If you have Butterfree or
Beedrill at this stage, they should be
able to sweep through too. Don't
forget to pick up some good items
along the way, and you can always
ahead back to the Pokemon Center if
you need to heal up. The final Sage
also has a Hoothoot, so watch out for
that as well. Your reward for
reaching the top will be HM05 -
Flash, and you can teach that to one
of your Pokemon in order to light up
dark places (Like that cave before).
You'll need the badge from Violet
City Gym, so head there now.

Violet City Gym
----------------------
Falkner, the gym leader, specialises
in Flying types. If you have
Chikorita, it means you'll need
another Pokemon for back up. Be
careful when using Geodude, Onix or
Cyndaquil though, because you'll be
an easy target for Mud-Slap.

Gust

The two moves you should be
watching out for are Gust, which is
now a Flying type move and very
damaging against Bugs and Grass
types, and also Mud-Slap, a ground
move, which is super-effective
against Fire and Rock types. Mud-
Slap also reduces accuracy. If you
have a Gastly from Sprout Tower, try
putting them to sleep with Hypnosis,
then switching out and using
another Pokemon against them,
otherwise just full-on attack and
heal when necessary.

When you win, you'll receive the
Zephyr Badge, and TM31 - Mud-Slap,
a ground type move that causes
damage and reduces accuracy. Your
Pokemon's attack stat will increase,
and you'll now be able to use HM05
- Flash outside of battle. Upon
exiting the Gym, you'll receive a
phonecall from Prof Elm, so follow his
instructions and head to the
Pokemon Center. His Aide there will
give you a PokeEgg that will hatch
into a Togepi after you've taken a
certain number of steps. It'll only
hatch if it's in your current party, so
if you don't really want it, just walk
around a lot and it'll eventually
hatch so you can deposit it in your pc.

WALKTHROUGH
Union Cave
If it's Thursday, take the north-west
exit out of Violet City and you'll find
Arthur, who will give you a Hard
Stone, which increases the power of
Rock type moves by 10%. There's no
where else to go except south, so
you can do so now. This is the Ruins
of Alph, and you can read about it
here.

From the ruins, continue south and
head through the gatehouse.
Heading north will take you back to
Violet City, so follow the path down.
The guy here will give you a Miracle
Seed if you talk to him, which
increases the power of Grass type
moves by 10%. The path to Union
Cave is very straightforward, but
there are a lot of trainers along the
way. Pick up a Potion and a Great
Ball along the way. Don't bother
with the cheesy salesman who's
trying to sell you a SlowpokeTail. If
it's Friday, Frieda will be here and
she'll give you a Poison Barb, which
increases the power of Poison type
moves by 10%. Heal up at the
Pokemon Center, and head into
Union Cave when you're ready.

Union Cave is full of Pokemon and
full of trainers. You'll need to return
here when you have Strength and
Surf, but otherwise it's a simple
route to the exit near Azalea Town.
Items to get include a Potion, a
Great Ball, an X Attack and an
Awakening. You'll see a ladder
heading down near the X Attack -
you'll come back here when you
have Surf, but there's TM39 - Swift,
and an X Defend that you can get if
you go down. The exit's just up
ahead.

Azalea Town and Slowpoke Well
-------------------------------------------


To the west of Union Cave is Azalea
Town. You'll notice that Team Rocket
is blocking the entrance to the gym,
so heal at the Pokemon Center, buy
any items at the PokeMart, and go
into the north-west house. This is
the home of Kurt, the Pokeball
Maker. If you collect Apricorns (like
the White one in his backyard), he'll
create a custom Pokeball for you in a
day's time. Anyway, after talking to
him, he'll head off to the Slowpoke
Well at the entrance to town, so
follow him.

You'll notice the guard outside the
well is no longer there, so head
down. Kurt's conveniently paralysed
himself, so it's up to you to battle
all the Rockets and save the day.
They've got mostly Poison Pokemon
and Rattata, so if you're having
trouble beating them, you really
should level up more. There's also a
Super Potion up for grabs. Oh yeah,
while I was writing this walkthrough,
I caught a shiny Zubat here ^.^
Anyway, Kurt will take you back to
his house after you've chased the
Rockets away, and if you talk to him,
he'll offer his Pokeball services to
you and will give you a Lure Ball.
You're also free to battle at the gym.

This should be an easy battle - any
Flying, Rock or Fire types should
sweep through the battle. The only
attacking moves that Metapod and
Kakuna knows is Tackle and Poison
Sting respectively. Scyther will be a
little bit harder, but any status
effects should shut it down. Be
careful of Fury Cutter, as its power
doubles each consecutive turn.
When you win, you'll receive the
Hive Badge, and TM49 - Fury Cutter,
a bug type move whose base power
doubles each consecutive turn that
it is used. Lv30 or below Pokemon
will now obey you, and you'll now be
able to use HM01 - Cut outside of
battle.

Ilex Forest
---------------

you try to exit to the forest, you'll
be stopped by your rival, who has a
lv12 Gastly, lv14 Zubat and a lv16
evolved starter. Not an extremely
difficult battle, but once again, if
you're having serious problems, you
really should spend sometime
levelling up.

In the forest, you'll come across a
boy whose Farfetch'd has gone
missing. It's your job to look for it,
and chase it back to the boy's
location. When you see it, talk to it
once so that it flies away. Instead of
talking to it again, head around to
the other side by going right and up
(There's a Revive here). Just talk to it
a few times in the right direction
and you'll get it done. As a reward,
you'll get HM01 - Cut, which you can
use to cut down small bushes. If
you follow the boy back to his house
(It's next to the gym), he'll give you
a Charcoal, which powers up Fire
type moves by 10%. With the new
HM, teach it to a suitable Pokemon
and slice through the small bush to
the next part of Ilex Forest.
There's lots of hidden items around,
so just check with the A button at
suspicious spots. There's also a boy
here who will give you TM02 -
Headbutt. This move allows you to
shake small trees and this may cause
certain Pokemon to drop out and
attack. The path out is quite easy,
and you'll be out in no time.

Route 34
------------

Inside the gatehouse, the lady with
the Butterfree to the right will give
you TM12 - Sweet Scent, which, when
used in the playing field, will attract
wild Pokemon. One of the greatest
features of Pokemon Gold, Silver and
Crystal lies just up ahead - the
Breeding Center.

At the Breeding Center, you can
deposit two Pokemon and the old
couple there will raise it for you -
for a price, of course. But if the two
Pokemon are compatible, they'll
produce a PokeEgg that will
eventually hatch into another
Pokemon! Moreover, these Pokemon
will inherit certain new moves that
they might not have learned by
themselves, and they'll also be
stronger. For more information, check

Goldenrod City
----------------------

The largest city in Johto, Goldenrod
is certainly the busiest place
around. You'll notice the giant
MegaMart next to the Pokemon
Center as you enter the city; there's
also the Casino, Radio Tower,
Undeground Passage, and of course
the Gym.

Stock up on items at the MegaMart -
there are vitamins, battle enhancers,
trainer essentials and TMs available.
On Sundays at the 5th Floor, a lady
will rate your Pokemon's Happiness
and will give you TM27 - Frustration
or TM21 - Return accordingly. A boy
here will also trade your Drowzee for
his Machop, and a girl will activate
Mystery Gifting for you too. You'll
also notice the basement if you take
the lift, but you'll come back here
later.

At the casino, there's some good
Pokemon you can earn, but the real
prize is the TMs: TM14 - Blizzard,
TM15 - Hyper Beam, TM25 - Thunder
and TM38 - Fire Blast. The Coin
Case, used for holding coins, can be
found in the Underground Passage
near the Haircutter's Stall. Further
west of the casino is Bill's House,
and you can get his phone number
from his little sister.

One entrance to the Underground
can be found just near Bill's House,
the other is at the north end of
town. While there are some trainers
here, the main feature are two
shops - firstly, the Haircutter
Brothers will groom your Pokemon
and increases its happiness;
secondly the Herb Shop sells some
cheap but bitter-tasting medicine.
Don't forget to pick up the Coin Case
while you're here.

The Radio Station is the large black
tower by the sea. Talk to the lady at
the right side of the counter, and
she'll ask you five questions. Answer
with the following: Yes, Yes, No, Yes,
No, and you'll receive a Radio Card
for your PokeGear. The man in the
middle runs a lottery based on the
ID Number of your Pokemon. The
current "Lucky Number" is found by
tuning into 8.5 on the radio.

Next to the Radio Tower is the train
station, but since there aren't any
trains running yet, there's nothing
you can do here. But if you head
over to the other side of town,
behind the MegaMart, a lady will
tell you the Happiness level of your
Pokemon. This is quite useful if
you're evolving Happiness-based
Pokemon like Chansey. If you head
down from there, talk to the Bike
Shop owner to receive a free Bike.
Don't forget you can assign the
Select button to a Key Item, so you
don't have to keep going to the
menu to use it.

At the north end of town is the
Name Rater, who will change the
names of the Pokemon you've caught
or hatched. Traded Pokemon can't
have their nicknames changed. The
other entrance to the Underground
is here, but most importantly, the
Goldenrod City Gym is just across
the road.

----------------

This battle is going to be quite
challenging, so I hope your Pokemon
are at least level 20. If you're
observant, you'll notice the
Goldenrod Gym is laid out in the
shape of a Pokemon.. do you know
what it is?

Any fighting types should be quite
strong against Clefairy and Miltank,
and if you have a Gastly or Haunter
with a non-Ghost attacking move,
this battle is quite easy. If you
don't.. well, launch an all out
offensive with everything you have.
Miltank has high HP, high Defense,
good Speed, and it knows Milk Drink
too, so it'll be quite tough to take
down. The best methods are using
status ailments like Poison and
biding your time, or putting it to
sleep and attack. Alternatively, any
Pokemon with Counter should do the
trick. If you're having trouble and
don't have any Fighting types, try
getting a Nidoran north of
Goldenrod and use its Double Kick
attack to deal some good damage.
Oh yes, watch out for Attract!
Whitney will have a crying fit after
you beat her, just talk to the Lass
nearby, then to Whitney again, and
you'll receive the Plain Badge. It
allows you to use HM04 - Strength
outside of battle, and it boosts your
Pokemon's speed. You'll also receive
TM45 - Attract, which makes attacks
from Pokemon of the opposite
gender fail 50% of the time. Deadly.

National Park
-------------------

After beating Whitney, visit the
house with plants to the right of the
Gym. The lady there will give you a
SquirtBottle which you will need for
later on. You'll probably need to
heal at the PokeCenter too, so do so
and head north through the
gatehouse. Talk to the keeper to
receive a Spearow with Mail
attached. Hold on to it for a while -
you'll deliver the message in a bit.
Continue north - instead of heading
through the gatehouse now, head
right into the grass and follow the
path down and around to get TM04 -
Rollout. Now, head through the
gatehouse.

National Park is the home of the Bug
Catching contest, held on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays. The
objective is to catch the strongest
bug Pokemon - the prize is a Sun
Stone. Moreover, you'll get to keep
the Pokemon, so this is a nice free
way of getting some good Bug types
like Scyther or Pinsir at the
beginning of the game. If you don't
want to participate, just ignore the
guard and head through. At this
next area, talk to the lady on the far
right to receive a Quick Claw. If you
head further in, you'll see some long
grass (You'll notice the park takes
the shape of a certain something..
check the World Map to see). There's
an outer pathway that appears to be
fenced off, but if you head to the
north-east side of the park where a
boy playing a Gameboy is standing,
you'll see an opening through the
fence. You'll get a Paralyz Heal if
you head right, TM28 - Dig if you
head left, and if you head all the
way around near the south entrance,
you'll get a hidden Full Heal.

When you're ready, head east and
examine the funny tree - it's a
Sudowoodo. Choose to use the
SquirtBottle, and it'll attack. This is
the only Sudowoodo in the game, so
try to catch it if you can.
Sudowoodo

Whatever the outcome, talk to the
guy to the right and he'll give you
TM08 - Rock Smash for clearing the
path. Continuing east returns you to
Violet City - remember that Spearow
with the mail? Head past Violet City
to that dark cave. There's a fat man
nearby a berry tree - give him the
mail, and you'll get TM50 -
Nightmare in return.

Ecruteak City
----------------

From where Sudowoodo stood, you
can head left towards Ecruteak City
(There are three apricorn bushes on
the right side of the road, past the
wild grass. If its Sunday, Sunny will
be here to give you a Magnet). Head
to the Pokemon Center to find Bill,
and he's just fixed the Time
Machine so that you'll be able to
trade with Pokemon Red, Blue and
Yellow tomorrow. You can return to
Bill's house in Goldenrod City to get
an Eevee from him.

There's quite a bit to do here; first
of all, head to the house between
the Pokemon Center and the Gym,
and talk to the guy there to get an
Itemfinder. Behind the Pokemon
Center is the Ecruteak Dance theatre
- battle the five girls on stage (They
each have an Eevee evolution), then
talk to the man next to the Rhydon
to receive HM03 - Surf.

Finally, there's the Burned Tower at
the northwest point of town, where
your rival will challenge you as soon
as you step inside. He's got a lv20
Haunter, lv20 Zubat, lv18 Magnemite
and a lv22 evolved starter. He's not
really that hard, so once you're done
with him, you can explore. You'll
really want someone that knows Rock
Smash, so teach it to a spare
Pokemon to proceed. You can use
Rock Smash to remove cracked rocks
in the way. The black gaps in the
floor cause you to fall down to the
basement level where there are
some items...and a surprise. Search
using your new Itemfinder too. You
can pick up a hidden Burn Heal by
falling down the right-most gap and
another Burn Heal by Rock Smashing
up the right path (past the trainer,
don't fall down the gap yet). If you
do fall down the gap, you'll notice a
square-ish rock that you'll need
HM04 - Strength to get past.

On the left side, if you fall down the
second gap, you can grab an HP Up,
but the real deal is if you Rock
Smash your way past that and head
around the trainer (A FireBreather,
notice how he turns black and white
after you beat him), and fall down
the small 1x1 hole (grab that X
Speed before you do). You'll fall
down onto an inaccessible ledge,
and if you walk up the stairs, you'll
release the three legendary
Pokemon, Raikou, Suicune and Entei.
From now on, they'll appear at
random places on the World Map,
and you'll be able to catch them.
Search their resting spot for a
Nugget, and head out.

Ghosts are immune to all Normal
and Fighting attacks. However, since
all of Morty's Pokemon are part
Poison, you can use that Dig TM
from National Park to take out
Gastly, Haunter and Gengar very
easily, or a fast Psychic Pokemon like
Kadabra. If you have a Normal
Pokemon that knows some good
special attacks, they'll be good too
because Ghost attacks don't affect
Normal types.. Moreover, Morty likes
to use Curse a lot, so take advantage
of the free 50% damage, then switch
out to prevent Curse damage. Be
careful with Lick's paralysis.

Morty will reward you with the Fog
Badge when you defeat him, which
makes all Pokemon under level 50
obey you, and allows your Pokemon
to use HM03 - Surf outside of battle.
You'll also get TM30 - Shadow Ball,
the most powerful Ghost-type attack.
It sometimes lowers your opponent's
special defense.
