Olivine City ---------------
Now that you have the Fog Badge and Surf, there's a few things you can do around the place. You may have noticed that you can gain access to the Tin Tower (At the north-east end of town), but there'll be a monk there guarding the stairs to the first level. You'll need to return when you have the Rainbow Wing.
And now that you have Surf, you can go some places that you haven't been to and get some good items or strong Pokemon. At this stage, you can head to Mt Mortar and Mahogany Town to the east, but this will be covered later. More opportunities for treasure hunting will be covered when you get HM04 - Strength and HM02 - Fly.
Head west from Ecruteak City all the way until you reach a house with some Miltank grazing in the grass outside. Use your Itemfinder to grab a hidden Nugget among the Miltank. You'll find out from the owners that they have a sick Miltank that won't produce any MooMoo Milk, so head next door where their two kids are and feed the Miltank seven Berries (There's a Berry bush near the Ecruteak West Gatehouse). Talk to the farmer's wife and she'll give you TM13 - Snore as a token of appreciation.
Continue south to Olivine City, where, on approaching the Gym, your rival will appear and tell you that the Gym Leader's in the Lighthouse. First of all, head to the Pokemon Center and heal up. Next door, talk to the sailor to get HM04. If today is Monday, you can head out to the west by the rocks and the sea to find Monica, who will give you a Sharp Beak. This hold-item boosts the power of Flying type moves by 10%. You can also get a Good Rod if you visit the house next to the PokeMart (Try fishing by the port), and a man in the northeast end of town will trade a Voltorb for your Krabby. But to advance with the story, head into the tall structure in the southeast end of town. The path to the top is very easy, but you'll be met with many trainers along the way. The black pits you see will drop you to the level below. You'll get to a level where there will be two black pits - head right and walk right around the lighthouse past a sailor and climb the stairs there. You'll be able to get TM34 - Swagger and a Rare Candy on this level. Head down back to where your path split and head left and down the pit. You should land in a little room with a sailor and an ether. Continue up the stairs, grabbing a Great Ball along the way, and you'll eventually reach a room where Jasmine is nursing a sick Ampharos. When you talk to her, she'll ask you to go to Cianwood City to get some medicine. Before leaving the lighthouse, grab the Super Potion to the left of the room.

Cianwood City -------------------
On arriving at Cianwood City, check out some of the houses - you can get a picture taken of your Pokemon which can then be printed out using the Gameboy Printer Peripheral; a boy will give you a Shuckle on loan (But you don't really have to return it) and finally in the southern-most house, you can get a SecretPotion for Amphy back in Olivine City. But your quest isn't done yet - head to the Gym of Chuck, the fighting Pokemon master.
Cianwood City Gym Make sure you bring along someone that knows HM04 - Strength. The puzzle is quite esay, but if you're stuck, push the left and right boulders up one space, then shift the center boulder to the left (or right) out of the way.
Cianwood City Gym: Chuck Speciality: Fighting
Pokemon Information Moves
Primeape Level: 27 Type: Fighting Leer Rage Karate Chop Fury Swipes
Poliwrath Level: 30 Type: Water/ Fighting Hypnosis Mind Reader Surf Dynamicpunch
This should be an easy battle. Any Flying, Ghost or Psychic types will breeze through the battle. For Poliwrath, you can use a Grass or Electric type to take advantage of its Water-half. The only major threat is Poliwrath's Hypnosis, and confusion caused by DynamicPunch, but it hits only 50% of the time anyway. Chuck will reward you with the Storm Badge when you defeat him, which makes all Pokemon under level 70 obey you, and allows your Pokemon to use HM02 - Fly outside of battle. You'll also get TM01 - DynamicPunch, which is a hard hitting Fighting move that always causes confusion, but is 50% accurate. --------------------------------- Treasure Hunting ----------------------------------
Once the battle is over, talk to the lady walking outside the Cianwood Gym, who is in fact Chuck's wife. She'll reward you with HM02 - Fly, so you can teach it to one of your Pokemon and be taken to any town or city you've visited previously. This makes treasure hunting a lot easier, as you can quickly return to earlier towns and get to new places with your new HMs. These quests can be taken at any time. Check out the guides for Ruins of Alph, Union Cave and Mt Mortar . You can also grab a
few good items -
- New Bark Town: By now, Togepi should have hatched from the egg you got from Violet City. Return to Prof Elm with the news and he'll give you an Everstone.
- Cherrygrove City: Surf across the water at the southwest end of town and talk to the fisherman to get a Mystic Water which powers up Water-type moves by 10%. - Violet City: Surf across the water behind the Pokemon Academy to get a Rare Candy, and also Surf behind the Gym to get a PP Up.
- Azalea Town: In Slowpoke's Well, use Strength on the boulder and Surf over the water to get to the ladder. In the next room, a man on the left ledge will give you a King's Rock, while the item on the right ledge is TM18 - Rain Dance. Don't forget that Kurt can make custom Pokeballs for you!
- Route 34: Surf south on the water opposite the Breeding Center. You'll come across a secret area with three trainers - talk to Kate, the bottom one, to get a Soft Sand once you beat her. Soft Sand powers up Ground-type moves by 10%. - Ecruteak City: At the Burned Tower, use Rock Smash on the rock to the right, then drop down the hole to the north. Use Strength to get TM20 - Endure.
Of course, you can fly back to meet the Once-A-Week Siblings to get their items if you missed them. You should have met them all apart from Wesley and Santos. Sibling Location Day Item
Monica Route 40 Monday Sharp Beak TuscanyRoute 29 Tuesday Pink Bow Wesley Lake of Rage WednesdayBlackbelt Arthur Route 36 Thursday Hard Stone Frieda Route 32 Friday Poison Barb Santos Blackthorn City Saturday Spell Tag Sunny Route 37 Sunday Magnet You can always leave this to later. Head back to the lighthouse and give Jasmine the SecretPotion. She'll thank you and return to the Gym. ----------------------/ Olivine City Gym -----------------------
There aren't any trainers or puzzles, so just head up to the platform and challenge Jasmine.
Olivine City Gym: Jasmine Speciality: Steel
Pokemon Information Moves
Magnemite Level: 30 Type: Electric/ Steel Thunderbolt Supersonic Sonicboom Thunder Wave
Magnemite Level: 30 Type: Electric/ Steel Thunderbolt Supersonic Sonicboom Thunder Wave
Steelix Level: 35 Type: Ground/ Steel Screech Sunny Day Rock Throw Iron Tail
This too should be easy. Steel Pokemon are weak to Fire, Fighting and Ground attacks, but are immune to Poison attacks. Use that Dig TM you got earlier, or try out DynamicPunch now (if you're feeling lucky). Steelix is part Ground, so you can hit it with Water attacks (Grass and Ice attacks are resisted by Steel).
Jasmine will reward you with the Mineral Badge when you defeat her, which raises your Pokemon's Defense stat. You'll also get TM23 - Iron Tail, which is a good Steel move that can lower your opponent's defense.

Lake of Rage ------------------
Walk (or Fly) back to Ecruteak City and head east, picking up an Ultra Ball before you reach the water. You can head into Mt Mortar, or you can just Surf across the water. There's some rather common Pokemon like Machop and Zubat in Mt Mortar, but you can get a few items like an Ether and a Guard Spec. You'll need someone with Flash so you can see as well. The real secret to Mt Mortar can be accessed once you have HM07 - Waterfall. Check out the Optional Area walkthrough for more information.
Alternatively, if you take the outdoors way, you can get a Super Potion and if you have someone who knows Cut, you can get three new Apricorns for Kurt. In any case, keep heading east and you'll reach Mahogany Town. You'll notice the east exit is blocked by a saleman and the gym is blocked by some random fat guy, so heal at the Pokemon Center and head north through the gatehouse.
From here, you can take the west path through the grass, or you can pay $1000 to go through the gatehouse. There's a Max Ether by the toll gate, as well as a berry bush across the water (You'll need Cut).
Eventually you should reach the actual lake. Ensure that you have some Pokeballs with you and head across to the middle of the lake. You'll notice a Pokemon floating around there, so examine it and you'll be attacked by a red Gyarados! If you didn't already know, there are some very rare Pokemon that have different colours from what they usually have, and they are commonly called "Shinies" because sparkly stars appears when you send them into battle. You should try to catch this Gyarados as the chances of finding another one like it are very low.
Regardless of whether you faint or catch it, you'll receive a Red Scale. Head back to land and talk to the person that has appeared by the sign - this is Lance, the Pokemon League Champion. Offer to help, and he'll teleport back to Mahogany Town. Before you follow him, there's some treasure hunting to do. You can now return at anytime to the Lake of Rage by using Fly.
From the Lake, head south, but stick to the west. You'll see a fisher standing on a land bridge between two patches of water, so follow this path north. You'll need someone with Cut here. Don't forget to use the Itemfinder around here, because there's lots of hidden items. They're mostly found in long narrow passages that lead to a dead end. Some items you can get are a Rare Candy, Full Restore, Max Ether, TM43 - Detect and inside the house, TM10 - Hidden Power. If today is Wednesday, Wesley should also be around here to give you a Blackbelt, which increases the power of Fighting-type moves by 10%. Head back to Mahogany Town.

Team Rocket's Headquarters ---------------------------------------
In Mahogany Town, head to the Mart. Lance will open up a hidden stairway into the depths of the Rockets' Headquarters. In here, walking past the Persian statues triggers an alarm that causes Rocket members to come in and attack. There's also some traps on the far west side where you'll be attacked by a whole lot of Pokemon who know Self-Destruct (You can catch them too, by the way). If you decide to go the longer, non-trap way, you can pick up an X Accuracy, a Hyper Potion and a Nugget. The stairs to the next floor down are in the bottom-left corner, where you'll also find a teleport pad that will return you to the beginning.
In the next room, Lance will heal your Pokemon. Continue on, fighting off the Rockets. The door needs the boss's password, and the boss's password is in the boss's room, which needs two passwords to unlock. So go on a hunt to find the two Rockets who will grant you access. On the next floor, the female Rocket in the room immediately above you will tell you one password (Slowpoketail) once you beat her, and also the Rocket in the bottom left room when you beat him (Raticate Tail). You can also grab a Full Heal and Dire Hit in this room. Search around the remainder of the floor for an Ice Heal and a Protein, then head down the stairs in the top right corner.
Follow the path (You can grab TM46 - Thief by heading up some stairs) and you'll eventually be stopped by your rival, who will complain about Lance. Blah. Head through the door (You'll automatically enter the two passwords) and defeat the Rocket inside. Once you've beaten him, talk to the Murkrow by the computer to get the boss's password to the first room (Hail Giovanni). So head all the way back, and two Rockets will show up. Lance will take care of one, and you'll need to battle the other. After the battle, Lance will blab on about more things, and then he'll tell you to faint (or catch them if you want) the three Electrode on the left-side of the generator. You'll stop the weird signal, save the day, and earn HM06 - Whirlpool. ----------------------------- Mahogany Town Gym -----------------------------
Pokemon Information Moves
Seel Level: 27 Type: Water Headbutt Icy Wind Aurora Beam Rest
Dewgong Level: 29 Type: Water/Ice Headbutt Icy Wind Aurora Beam Rest
Piloswine Level: 31 Type: Ice/ Ground Icy Wind Fury Attack Mist Blizzard
This could be difficult if you're unlucky. A good electric attack should be able to defeat Dewgong and Seel, and a water Pokemon that knows Surf can resist Piloswine's Ice attacks and deal double damage as its Ground half is weak to water. Alternatively, Steel, Rock, Fighting and Fire attacks are super effective, but Dewgong's Water half resists Steel and Fire-type moves. Blizzard and Ice Beam can cause freezing, so you should have some Ice Heal or Full Heal to counter, while Aurora Beam and Icy Wind lower attack and speed respectively. Don't bring in any Ground, Flying, Dragon or Grass Pokemon.
Pryce will reward you with the Glacier Badge when you defeat him, which raises your Pokemon's Special Attack and Special Defense stats, and allows you to use HM06 - Whirlpool outside of battle. You'll also get TM16 - Icy Wind, which is a weak Ice move that lowers your opponent's speed.

Team Rocket's Return -----------------------------
On stepping outside, Prof Elm will call and tell you that something is wrong with the Radio Broadcasts. Before heading to the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City, head to the toll booth north of town where the Rockets charged you $1000 to get through. The guard there will give you TM36 - Sludge Bomb, and will allow passage to the Lake of Rage for free. If you return there, you'll see that some trainers have appeared. At this stage, you can head to Blackthorn City through the Ice Path east of Mahogany Town, but this will be covered later. Head back to Goldenrod City, where you'll see that the Rockets are guarding the passageways to many of the buildings. Heal at the Pokemon Center, and head to the Radio Tower.
Team Rocket have taken over the Radio Tower, and so you'll have to fight your way to the very top where the director's office is. Most of them have Rattata and Poison Pokemon, so it's not very hard. Feel free to return to the Pokemon Center to heal at any time. On the top floor, you'll see the director is actually a Team Rocket executive who you'll have to fight. When you beat him, he'll give you the Basement Key. Head to the Underground via the north exit by the Nickname Rater's house. The long narrow passage leading to the right leads to the Underground Warehouse where the Director is being held captive. As soon as you enter the Underground however, your rival will appear and challenge you to a battle with a lv30 Golbat, lv28 Magnemite, lv32 Sneasel, lv30 Haunter and a lv32 evolved starter. After the battle, he'll run off, and you're left to contend with a bunch of doors, and three switches. Each switch opens some doors and closes others, so you'll have to find the correct combination to get through. The sequence is actually really easy, but in order to get the items (Full Heal and Smoke Ball), you'll have experiment yourself. If you mess up, simply exit the room and reenter to try again. In order to proceed, flick the switches in this order: Left, Center, Right, and make your way to the doors in the bottom right corner.
Inside the warehouse, just follow the path, grabbing a Max Ether along the way. When you get to the stairs, continue on to find the director and TM35 - Sleep Talk. He'll give you a Card Key, which will open the shutters on the third floor of the Radio Tower. Head up the warehouse stairs and get the Amulet Coin. Return later, and the position of the boxes will have changed so you can get the other items (an Ultra Ball, a Burn Heal and an Ether).
Heal once you're out, and head to the Radio Tower where you can examine the shutters to unlock them. Work your way to the top where Team Rocket is broadcasting their radio signal. The Rocket Executives are harder than usual, but still easy if you have the type advantage. Use Psychic, Water, Ice and Electric-type moves to your advantage. Once again, you've saved the day and you'll get a Rainbow Wing if you're playing Pokemon Gold, or a Silver Wing if you're playing Pokemon Silver. See the section on Ho-oh and Lugia if you want to go catch them now.
Meanwhile, you can get some items as thanks for freeing the Radio Tower. Talk to Mary one floor down to get a Pink Bow, which increases the power of Normal-type moves by 10%. You can also get TM11 - Sunny Day from the girl walking around near the shutters on the third floor.
-------------- Ice Parth ------------- So with Team Rocket out of the way, head east from Mahogany Town to the Ice Path that will take you to Blackthorn City. You'll notice that in Mahogany Town, someone has opened up shop in the house leading to the Rocket's HQ, so check it out of you want. On Route 44, you can surf to the middle of the lake for a Max Revive, a hidden Elixir, and some wild Pokemon. There's an Ultra Ball to the northeast, and nearby, the entrance to the Ice Path. Make sure you have someone with Strength.
Drop down to the next level and you'll see that the rocks have conveniently formed a spiralling route to the center ladder. Check the four corners of the room too, there's a Max Potion and a hidden Carbos. The center platform has a Full Heal. In the next room, you'll see a place where you can use Rock Smash, but you can just walk right around to get the item ball, a Nevermeltice, which powers up Ice- type moves by 10%. Continuing on, the next room has an easy sliding puzzle that you should be able to figure out yourself. The item ball contains TM44 - Rest. In the next
The bottom path leads to an Iron, while the top path leads to the exit. Grab a PP Up in the next room before heading outside.

Blackthorn City --------------------
If today is Saturday, you'll find Santos near the gym, and he'll give you a Spell Tag, which powers up Ghost-type moves by 10%. You can also trade a Rhydon for your female Dragonair. But perhaps the most useful person in town is the Move Deleter, who will force a Pokemon to forget a move, even if it is an HM Move. He can be found a little to the south of the PokeMart. Behind the gym is the Dragon's Den, and you'll be coming here very soon. Head to the Gym first, and bring along someone who knows Strength. ---------------------------- Blackthorn City Gym ----------------------------
Clair, the gym leader, specialises in Dragon Pokemon, meaning your visit through Ice Path should have netted you some good Ice types. The gym puzzle involves pushing a few rocks down some holes to make a bridge across the lava to the gym leader - not an extremely difficult task.
Pokemon Information Moves
Dragonair Level: 37 Type: Dragon Thunder Wave Surf Slam Dragonbreath
Dragonair Level: 37 Type: Dragon Thunder Wave Thunderbolt Slam Dragonbreath
Dragonair Level: 37 Type: Dragon Thunder Wave Ice Beam Slam Dragonbreath
Kingdra Level: 40 Type: Water/ Dragon Smokescreen Surf Hyper Beam Dragonbreath
This is going to be tough. While Dragonair can paralyse with Thunder Wave, Kingdra can too, with Dragonbreath. Dragons have a lot of resistances: Water, Fire, Grass and Electric, but are weak to Ice attacks. Utilise other types you have like Fighting and Psychic to really deal the damage, and use status ailments to your advantage. Watch out for Kingdra's Smokescreen that will really annoy you, and keep your HP high so that you won't be caught by Hyper Beam.
Clair won't give you the Rising Badge just yet. You'll be instructed to go to the Dragon's Den to pick up a Dragon Fang, so grab yourself a Pokemon with Whirlpool and Surf, and head to the cave behind the gym.
Inside, surf close to the west, and south until you reach a Whirlpool. Examine it and choose to get rid of it, and continue around until you see an Item Ball. On picking it up, Clair will award you the Rising Badge, which makes all Pokemon obey you, and allows you to use HM07 - Waterfall outside of battle. You'll also get TM24 - Dragonbreath, a strong Dragon-type attack that can cause paralysis.

Victory Road ------------------
Head straight for the double doors at the end of the hallway and you'll enter a cave... just like RBY, it's Victory Road minus the switches. If you look carefully, you can see some similiarities in layout. On entering, check the lone rock to the left for a Full Heal, and head up the platform. At the fork, going right takes you to another Full Heal and a Max Revive. Left takes you to the next level. Follow the platform around and grab the X Special before continuing east then north to the ladder. In this new level, you can follow the platform right round and drop down the ladder to get a Full Restore, or you can head around and go all the way west to find a hole in the floor. Drop down to get TM26 - Earthquake (and a hidden Max Potion). But whatever the case, the exit is just to the north, but be careful, your rival will appear and challenge you to another battle. He'll have rather weak Pokemon, so the battle should just be very routine. He has a lv34 Sneasel, a lv35 Kadabra, a lv36 Golbat, a lv35 Magneton, a lv35 Haunter and a lv38 fully evolved starter. Head through the cave exit, and through the double doors of the Indigo Plateau. -------------/------ Imdigo Plateau --------------+----
It's time for the toughest battles at the Indigo Plateau. You will face 5 of the best trainers in the game one after the other. While you have time to save and use items, you won't be able to go to a Pokemon Center. Should you lose, you'll start from the first trainer. Some handy tips to avoid whitewash: Have your Pokemon at bare minimum, level 50. Deposit all your money with Mom so that you won't lose any if you faint. Stock up on Full Restores, Revives and Full Heals. If you're having trouble, train some more at Victory Road. Finally, if you have to return to New Bark Town, or any other town for that matter, the guy on the left wall will Teleport you back. Are you ready? Head up the stairs at the far right. To make it easy on yourself, you should have a Dark type, a Psychic type, an Ice type (Or a Water type with Ice moves) and a Fighting type. Round your team off with good elemental moves like Surf, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Flamethrower.
