That's 'Route 102'. There you are fighting your first pokemon battle (except your rival battles). While you are at it, you will see some new 'berry' trees to the left. To the south there is a 'Itemball' in which it contains 'potion'. Now defeat all the trainers, gain experience, catch some pokemons if you want. No sooner than you think you will be in 'Petalburg City'.

'PETALBURG CITY' Unlike previous city, this city has a gym. But you are not able to fight here because this gym is fifth in the series. So, just stock up and heal your pokemons at 'pokemon centre'. As you are not fighting with gym leader here, you should go to the next gym. But wait... a person is blocking a way to 'Route 104'. This is because you should talk to gym leader. The gym leader here is also your 'father'. As you enter the gym, a person named 'Wally' comes and tells your dad that he wants to catch a pokemon. Your 'dad' gives him a 'Zigzagoon' and pokeball and asks you to see that he catches a pokemon. Now enjoy watching catch by 'Wally'. After he catches the pokemon, he takes you back to the gym leader. Talk to the gym leader and leave the gym.
What to do next?
Go through 'Route 104'. In Emerald, mysterious guy walks to you and he will tell you that he is in search of good trainer.
'Route 104' It's time to go on, and the first place you'll be is Route 104.After battling trainers, go north and go inside the Petalburg Woods.

'PETALBERG WOODS' You will see that 'Petalberg Woods is dark and creepy. Search for items around, fights some trainers or catch pokemons. Go towards north, and you will meet with a member of 'Team Magma/Team Aqua' depending on version you play. ('Team Magma in Ruby version and 'Team Aqua in Sapphire version.) In Emerald, Team Aqua member will fight. Their pokemons are tough. But you can beat them. After the fight, he will give you 'Great Ball'. If you want to get a hidden item, then once you enter the forest, go east, and you'll see an empty spot in the grass. Go near it, but not in it, and press "A" to obtain the 'Potion'. Exit the forest from the south, and you'll be able to pick up a 'PokeBall'. Finally, go back North, where you'll find another hidden item. There, you'll also find two trees. Come back here after one of your Pokemon learns the 'Cut' HM, cut the trees, and you'll be able to see the rest of the forest. You're back on Route 104 with more trainers to fight. Talk to the first person you see, and he'll give you 'TM09 - Bullet Seed'. You'll also see a flower shop. Go in there and talk to one of the girls. She'll give you the 'Wailmer Pail'. After planting a 'Berry', water it with this to make it grow. Behind the flower house is a hidden 'PokeBall', 'Super Potion', and a visible 'Potion'. Another item is blocked by a tree at the very east side of the route. Come back later with Cut to obtain the item. On the bridge, you'll be having your first two-on-two battle with the Twins. There's an old lady standing near the water. Talk to her, and she'll give you a 'Chesto Berry'. Head north a little more, and go into the space between the gates and the trees. Go straight forward pick up a 'X Defend'. You've now arrived at 'Rustboro City'.

'RUSTBORO CITY' After walking through the long, tiring route, you finally arrive in 'Rustboro City'. Here your are fighting the gym leader for your first gym badge. But before that just take a look around the city. Once you get in the city, go towards west. You will see a huge building. Go inside and go upstairs on the second floor. You'll see an old man and little boy. Talk to the little boy and he will give you 'Premieum Ball'. Go near centre of the city, there you'll find a 'School'. Go inside, talk to the teacher, he will give you 'Quick Claw'. In Emerald, go to lower-right side of the school and you'll find the mysterious guy, that talk you in 'Petalburg City'. After a talk to him, you will come to know that his name is 'Scott' and he is looking for 'Pokemon Battle Expert'. The main thing, go to the house next to 'Pokemon Centre'. Go inside, talk to the person and he will give you the most essential 'HM' move i.e., "HM-01 'CUT' ". Teach it to you pokemon, but remember, once it is taught to a pokemon it cannot be overwritten (for now) so teach it wisely. Now get ready to rock the gym. But before going to gym heal your pokemons.

' THE ROCKY GYM ' To the north of the city is the gym. If you choose 'Torchic' as your starter pokemon, then it will be hard for you beat the leader. And if you choose 'Treecko' or 'Mudkip' then it is great. But don't think you can win easily. You will have to fight two youngsters with 'Geodudes' before getting to leader. In Emerald, in second battle, you will battle a youngster and a hiker both at a time. You will battle total 5 'Geodudes'.
Now its time to battle the leader.
Before you battle the leader, heal your pokemons and save the game if necessary
'Roxanne' is the gym leader here. She use a lvl.14 'Geodude' and lvl.15 'Nosepass'. In Emerald, two lvl.12 'Geodudes' and 'Nosepass' will be there. It hard to defeat the 'Nosepass'. As you defeat the leader, she will give you " TM-38 'Rock Tomb' " and " Stone Badge ", it heightens the attack and you can use "HM" move "Cut" outside the battle.
Now leave the gym.
A person will talk to you about 'Team Magma/Team Aqua'. They stole his goods. Now, heal your pokemons and leave the city from 'Route 116' in search of goods.

'Route 116' To go to 'Route 116', you should go towards north-east of the city. While you are on your way, the person will talk to you again. Don't get angry with it as it is just a game. Go towards east on this route and you will find tons of trainers, items and the main, wild pokemons. Here you will be fighting a youngster and a hiker two-on-two battles. So be prepared. At the end of the route, you will see a cave with an old man standing near it and a house which entrance is blocked by a person. Before that, there is a small section of the route with trainers and items inside. Use 'Cut' to get inside.
As you try to get inside, the old person will talk to you about his pokemon. After that you get inside cave, you will find that it is totally foggy. To get an item, go straight and go toward east. You will encounter 'Team Magma/Team Aqua' member. In Emerald, you will encounter 'Team Aqua' member. Talk to him and he will fight you. After the battle, you will receive goods that is known as 'Devon Goods'. The old man will come and take his 'Wingull'. You cannot proceed further because there are boulders blocking the way. So get out of the cave. The guy blocking the house is not there. So you can explore the house but there is nothing to do there.
Now return to 'Rustboro City'.

After you return to 'Rustboro City', the person who talk to you before will talk to you again and will give you a 'Great Ball' and lead you to the President of 'Devon Corporation'. The President will talk to you and give you 'Pokenav' short for Pokemon Navigator. It can be seen in the menu. (It took place of 'Pokedex' from previous games). Its main function is to show map and other functions are also available. The President will ask you to give 'letter' to 'Steven' in 'Dewford Town'. Now just leave the building. In Emerald, before exiting, a scientist will stop you and add 'Match call' function to your 'Pokenav'. It is used to call the trainers you met before.
