Route 4 --+-----+-+--------------------------------- There are no more trainers to fight before the next Pokecenter so head east to two Blackbelts standing facing each other. They will teach your Pokemon Mega Kick and Mega Punch. For more information check out the Move Tutors Guide. Continue east and pick up TM05 - Roar. Head to the right a bit and then jump down into the grass. Below is a list of wild Pokemon. If you are desperate you can skip this and come back after you have healed up in Cerulean City.

The store has Super Potions so stock up. There is a hidden Rare Candy in the back yard of the top left most house. It is on the bottom line between the two flowers. Also note the Police Officer blocking the entrance to the house in the north east part of town. In the house next to the Pokecenter, the man will offer to trade you his Jynx for your Poliwhirl, but you won't have one yet so come back later. You may need to train up a bit before taking on Misty, the Cerulean Gym Leader, who uses water Pokemon. If this is the case read Route 24 below and then come back. Pikachu and Bulbasaur are great here. If you don't need any more training, head on over to the gym. Inside are two trainers who you can fight before Misty.

Route 25 has the same grass Pokemon. If you come back later with the rods then the pool is near Bill's house. Make sure you are healed up because there are quite a few trainers in this area. When ready continue east and then north to the trainer closest to the grass.
Trainer Battle Hiker Pokemon Level Machop Level 15 Geodude Level 15 Money Earned: P540
Continue east and there are two more trainers. Here's the top trainer:
Trainer Battle Youngster Pokemon Level Rattata Level 15 Spearow Level 15 Money Earned: P240
And the trainer below him:
Trainer Battle Hiker Pokemon Level Onix Level 17 Money Earned: P612
Continuing east is a rotating trainer:
Trainer Battle Youngster Pokemon Level Slowpoke Level 17 Money Earned: P272
South of him is a Picnicker: Trainer Battle Picnicker Pokemon Level Nidoran M Level 15 Nidoran F Level 15 Money Earned: P300
East of her is another Hiker:
Trainer Battle Hiker Pokemon Level Geodude Level 13 Geodude Level 13 Geodude Level 13 Machop Level 13 Money Earned: P468
Now the next trainer blocks access to an item. Be sure to walk three squares in front of him so when he spots you he moves out of the way of the entrance. Otherwise you can't get the item until you get Cut.
Trainer Battle Camper Pokemon Level Rattata Level 14 Ekans Level 14 Money Earned: P280
After beating him head up and grab TM43 - Secret Power. Now continue east and battle the next trainer running up and down:

East of him is the final trainer in this area:
Trainer Battle Lass Pokemon Level Oddish Level 13 Pidgey Level 13 Oddish Level 13 Money Earned: P208
Continue east and enter the house. This is Bill's house. Now it looks like nobody is here...but talk to the Clefairy. It's Bill, and he explains he got turned into a Pokemon during an experiment and couldn't get turned back. Agree to help him and when he is inside the machine, press A while in front of his PC and turn him back. Talk to him again and he will give you the S.S. Anne Ticket for helping him.
Bill made the Pokemon storage system, and from now on "Someone's PC" will be "Bill's PC". Now exit and head south and west for a quick route back to Cerulean City. Heal up and beat Misty if you haven't already. You will notice the Police blocking the house has now moved. Head inside and you'll find the people inside have been robbed. Head out the large hole in the back and you'll see a Rocket Member. Take him on!

After beating him follow the yellow path south, when you get to the Cerulean Gym, don't jump the barrier, instead take the right fork. At the bottom head left a bit a continue south onto Route 5.

Route 6 ------------------------------ Wild Pokemon
Pokemon Method Rate Psyduck Fish (Super Rod) 5% Poliwag Fish (Super Rod) 40% Poliwhirl Fish (Super Rod) 40% Slowpoke Fish (Super Rod) 5% Gyarados Fish (Super Rod) 15% Psyduck Surf 100% Slowpoke Surf 100% Pidgey Walk 40% Oddish Walk 25% Meowth Walk 35% Bellsprout Walk 25% Taking the left or right paths south will skip the grass and daycare in this area. Taking the center path will lead you to the Daycare Man's house. If you give him one of your Pokemon he will train your Pokemon. It gains one EXP point for every step you take. He will charge you Y100 for looking after you Pokemon and Y100 for every level it grows. This is not a Breeding Center. If you enter the building directly south of the Daycare Man's house the guard won't let you through. Instead, enter the building to the right of this. The girl inside will trade you her Nidoran F in FireRed or her Nidoran M in LeafGreen for your Nidoran of the opposite gender. Head down the stairwell and continue along the long tunnel. Head up the stairs at the other end and out of the building onto Route 6. This area has a lot af grass and a few trainers. The best idea is to follow the yellow path which will eventually take you south. Following this path you encounter trainers in the following order: Trainer Battle Bug Catcher Pokemon Level Weedle Level 16 Caterpie Level 16 Weedle Level 16 Money Earned: P192 Trainer Battle Camper Pokemon Level Squirtle Level 20 Money Earned: P400 Trainer Battle Picnicker Pokemon Level Rattata Level 16 Pikachu Level 16 Money Earned: P320 Trainer Battle Bug Catcher Pokemon Level Butterfree Level 20 Money Earned: P240 Trainer Battle Picnicker Pokemon Level Pidgey Level 16 Pidgey Level 16 Pidgey Level 16 Money Earned: P320 Trainer Battle Camper Pokemon Level Spearow Level 16 Raticate Level 16 Money Earned: P320 Walk south from these two trainers and you will enter Vermilion City!

Vermilion City -----------+-+- Vermilion City PokeMart Item Cost Pokeball 200 Super Potion 700 Antidote 100 Paralyz Heal 200 Awakening 250 Ice Heal 250 Repel 350 First let's get all the little stuff out of the way, because there is quite a lot to do in this city. Firstly head to the left building above the Gym. Go inside and listen to the President. This is the Pokemon fan club. He will give you a Bike Voucher! If you are very desperate for a bike you can run all the way back to Cerulean City and exchange the voucher for one but we will be heading back that way later so you may as well wait a bit. In the house to the right of this, a girl wants to trade her Farfetch'd for your Spearow. Inside the Pokemon Center, the lady standing at the counter will give you a VS Seeker. This tells you any previously-fought trainers around you who want to re-battle. In the house to the left of the Pokecenter a Fisherman will give you an Old Rod. This can only catch Magikarp. Now there are a range of things to do, and you can do them in any order you want but I suggest doing them in the following order. So let's start with the S.S. Anne. From the shop in Vermilion, head to the right a bit and south down the grey path. Follow it along and the Sailor will ask you for your ticket (which Bill gave you) so continue onto the boat. There are lots of rooms on the S.S. Anne, and some have trainers. We will call the floor we walked in on the '1st Floor'. Let's start with the top right hand room. Inside is a Gentleman. Trainer Battle Gentleman Pokemon Level Growlithe Level 18 Growlithe Level 18 Money Earned: P1296 The room to the left of this is your room. Talk to the lady and she will allow you to rest, fully healing your Pokemon. Entering the room to the left of this will immediately start another battle. Trainer Battle Gentleman Pokemon Level Nidoran M Level 19 Nidoran F Level 19 Money Earned: P1368 In the next two rooms there are no trainers or anything of interest. The room to the left of this there are two trainers willing to battle. We'll start with the first girl, then the boy: Trainer Battle Lass Pokemon Level Pidgey Level 18 Nidoran F Level 18 Money Earned: P288 Trainer Battle Youngster Pokemon Level Nidoran M Level 21 Money Earned: P336 At the bottom of their cabin is TM31 - Brick Break. In the final room there is nothing again. From here head down the path on the left to the door at the end. You should be in a Kitchen. In the bottom left hand corner of the room is a Great Ball, and in the three garbage cans on the right side of the room are three different Berries. Obtaining the first Berry will also put the Berry Bag into use. All Berries you find will now go into the Berry Bag, which can be accessed from the Key Items part of your bag. Now exit the Kitchen and head north and then all the way to the right, and then south and go down the stairs. The bin next to the stairs contains a Hyper Potion. Let's go through the rooms on this level. In the first room there is a Super Potion, so grab it. There are no trainers so head into the next room on the left. There are two sailors. The Sailor closest to the door has his stats listed first, and then the second sailor: Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Shellder Level 21 Money Earned: P672 Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Horsea Level 17 Shellder Level 17 Tentacool Level 17 Money Earned: P544 When you enter the next room you will instantly be challenged: Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Horsea Level 17 Horsea Level 17 Horsea Level 17 Money Earned: P544 Grab the Ether in his room and head onto the next room on the left. Inside is another Sailor: Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Tentacool Level 18 Staryu Level 18 Money Earned: P576 Grab TM44 - Rest which is in his room and head onto the final room, which has two trainers. The one on the right is listed first: Trainer Battle Fisherman Pokemon Level Tentacool Level 17 Staryu Level 17 Shellder Level 17 Money Earned: P612 Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Machop Level 20 Money Earned: P640 Leave the room and head all the way right and up the stairs. Then up and all the way left and up those stairs. You should now be on 'Floor 2'. Head south and up those stairs to 'Floor 3'. Continue all the way left and out onto the deck. There are two trainers here, head to the right and the Sailor in the middle will battle, his stats are listed first. The second trainer is the sailor to the left of him on the bow of the boat. Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Machop Level 17 Tentacool Level 17 Money Earned: P544 Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Machop Level 18 Shellder Level 18 Money Earned: P576 Head back down to 'Floor 2'. The first door on the left has only a man who mentions Snorlax. Talking to him will put Snorlax's Dex entry as 'seen' but not captured obviously. Head into the next room, the room to the right of his. There are two trainers, listed with the closest first:

Trainer Battle Fisherman Pokemon Level Goldeen Level 17 Goldeen Level 17 Tentacool Level 17 Money Earned: P612 Trainer Battle Gentleman Pokemon Level Pikachu Level 23 Money Earned: P1656 Grab the Stardust in this room and exit. There is nothing of interest in the next room, so head into the one after. Inside is a Lass (top) and a Gentleman (left): Trainer Battle Lass Pokemon Level Rattata Level 18 Pikachu Level 18 Money Earned: P288 Trainer Battle Gentleman Pokemon Level Growlithe Level 17 Ponyta Level 17 Money Earned: P1224 In their room be sure to grab the X Attack. Now there is nothing of interest in the last two rooms and do not go past them yet as you will be fighting your rival. So now return to 'Floor 1' and heal up in your room. You can get off the ship if required to buy items or catch more suitable Pokemon. Rival Battle If you chose: Bulbasaur | Charmander | Squirtle Pokemon Level Type Pidgeotto Level 19 Normal/ Flying Raticate Level 16 Normal Kadabra Level 18 Psychic Charmeleon Level 20 Fire Money Earned: P288 Items Received: - Fame Checker He hasn't leveled up much so it's only really evolutions which have occured. Kadabra will be the difficulty here, not just Teleport this time, but other Psychic moves will take your team out pretty quick if you aren't trained up enough. Raticate has pretty high attack too, so be careful of Hyper Fang. Pikachu or Geodude can take out Pidgeotto pretty easily because Sand Attack is very annoying. His starter shouldn't be too hard with a simple elemental attack. After beating your Rival, continue up the stairs into the Captain's room. Talk to him and you'll find out that he is sick, and that is why the S.S. Anne has been lingering in Vermilion. He will then give you HM01 - Cut! HM's (along with a few TM's) can be used outside of battle. Cut cuts down those small trees blocking your path everywhere! They can also be taught to as many Pokemon as you want (whereas TMs can only be used once). However you can't get these moves off your Pokemon until later in the game, so don't go around teaching them to everyone. Make sure you've done everything on the S.S. Anne that you want to because it leaves as soon as you exit. When ready, exit the S.S. Anne and go heal up. Now that we have Cut we can cut down the small tree blocking our way into the Vermilion City Gym, so teach Cut to one of your Pokemon and press A on the tree. With one chop it should be down, so enter the gym. This is an Electric Gym and there is a puzzle you need to solve before you gain access. Let's take on the trainers first though to gain a bit of experience. Electric attacks have no effect on Ground Pokemon, so if you haven't already got one try reading ahead and catching a diglett and try your luck with that. There are three trainers, I'll start with the one closest to the door, then the next guy and finally the Gentleman: Trainer Battle Sailor Pokemon Level Pikachu Level 21 Pikachu Level 21 Money Earned: P672 Trainer Battle Engineer Pokemon Level Voltorb Level 21 Magnemite Level 21 Money Earned: P1008 Trainer Battle Gentleman Pokemon Level Pikachu Level 23 Money Earned: P1656 Now, onto the puzzle. On the door to the leader's room are two electric bars, all you have to do is turn both off. Sounds easy well sometimes you get lucky...Firstly heal up because leaving the gym resets the puzzle. In the gym there are 15 rubbish bins. A switch can be hidden inside a rubbish bin. Now, what you have to do is find two switches. The first switch is always placed in one random bin. The second switch is always in a bin next to the first switch. However, if you have unlocked the first switch, and get the second switch wrong, then the first switch resets and you have to find it again. Once you have found both switches, you can take on Lt. Surge. Vermilion City Gym: Lt. Surge Speciality: Electric Pokemon Information Voltorb Level: 21 Type: Electric Pikachu Level: 18 Type: Electric Raichu Level: 24 Type: Electric Items Received: - TM34 Shock Wave - Thunder Badge - Fly can be used outside of battle First piece of advice, if you are really struggling you can skip this fight and come back later! Voltorb should be pretty easy to take down, and Pikachu is weaker than the Gentleman's outside, so Pikachu should also be easy to defeat. Ground Pokemon again will sweep pretty easy. Your biggest problem will be Raichu. The first few turns he uses Double Team, raising evasion. From then on a lot of your attacks will miss and it will be very difficult to take down. He will then use Quick Attacks and Shock Waves to finish you off. So ideally try to take Raichu down as quickly as possible. Surge will also use Super Potions if his Pokemon's health get too low. After beating him be sure to heal up as we still have a bit more to do around Vermilion City. When you are ready head east out of Vermilion onto Route 11.

Now head south and enter the building. If you go right through you find that Snorlax blocks your path. Go back inside the building and head upstairs. On the left side of the room is Prof. Oak's Aide. If you have caught 30 or more pokemon he will give you an Itemfinder . The Youngster also in this room will trade his Nidorina or Nidorino for your Nidorino or Nidorina, depending on what version you are playing. After doing this if you want, head back downstairs and left out of the building. Head south a bit and grab the Great Ball from the little path below the building. Diglett's Cave
--------------------- Diglett's Cave Wild Pokemon Pokemon Method Rate Diglett Walk 95% Dugtrio Walk 5% When you enter head down the ladder. There are only Diglett and the odd Dugtrio in here, so catch one as you progress through to the other end. Dugtrio have the Arena Trap ability which traps Pokemon and prevents escaping. Dugtrio is a pretty good Pokemon to catch for this stage in the game. Head up the ladder when you get to the other side and exit the cave. You will notice you are in the area near Pewter City which you couldn't access before. Use Cut on the tree to the left and head north toward Pewter City. Continue to the north up to the museum in Pewter. Head to the right and you will see a house to the side. Cut the tree which blocks entry to this house and go inside. Talk to the scientist directly in front of you (at the top of the room) and he will give you Old Amber. This will later be cloned to form Aerodactyl. Exit this room and head back south to the tree you cut near Diglett's Cave. Enter this area again and now head south. Go inside the first house and talk to the boy on the far side of the room. He will trade his Mr. Mime for your Abra. Exit this house and continue south, cutting the tree and going to the next house south. Inside this house is Prof. Oak's Aide. Talk to him and if you have caught 10 or more Pokemon he will give you HM05 - Flash. Exit south and head down to find an Ether. Continue south and you'll find a Paralyz Heal. You can use Cut by the bush here to get to Viridian City but there isn't anything to do there. Instead, head north back through the building, back through Diglett's Cave and back to Vermilion City. Heal here if needed. Now head north from Vermilion, back up Route 6, go through the underground tunnel north, back up Route 5 all the way back to Cerulean City. Now exchange your Bike Voucher at the Bike shop for a Bicycle. Now head back through the robbed house, follow the yellow path and when you get to Cerulean Gym head east.
