Littleroot Town
---------------------

You'll get an introduction to the
game from Professor Birch, a
Pokemon researcher. You'll get the
option to select a male character, or
a female character, and then your
name. The screen will fade, and
you'll find yourself in the back of a
moving truck. Turns out you and
your family have just shifted to
Littleroot Town. Hop out of the truck
and your Mom will come out to greet
you. Once you're indoors, head up
the stairs and set your clock. Unlike
Gold, Silver and Crystal, the clock
here controls tides, rather than day
and night. When you're satisfied,
press A to confirm the time.
Exaamine your PC to the left and
select Item Storage. Choose to
Withdraw a Potion, then head
downstairs.
You'll hear about your Dad, the
Petalburg Gym Leader, on television.
Head outside and go next door.
Head upstairs to meet your
neighbour - your neighbour will
change depending on which
character you are. If you chose the
male character, your neighbour will
be May, Birch's daughter. If you
chose the female character, your
neighbour will be Brendan, Birch's
son. In any case, you'll introduce
yourself and your neighbour will
head out the door. Go outside and
head north towards the exit - you'll
find that Professor Birch is being
attacked by a wild Poochyena.
Examine his bag and you'll be given
a choice of three Pokemon:

Treecko, a Grass type. This
Pokemon is good if you're a
beginner player.

Torchic, a Fire type that
gains a Fighting type when
it evolves. This Pokemon is
good if you're an expert
player.

Mudkip: www.psypokes.com/dex/regular/258.png

Mudkip, a Water type that
gains a Ground type when
it evolves. This Pokemon is
good if you're an
intermediate player.


Once you've chosen, you'll engage in
a battle with a Lv2 Poochyena - a
very basic battle, just attack away.
Prof Birch will thank you, then you'll
officially be given your starting
Pokemon that you chose earlier. Exit
the lab and head north.

Wild Pokemon may attack you if you
walk in the grass. Simply head north
to Oldale Town. You can heal your
Pokemon at the PokeCenter and buy
items at the PokeMart. Talk to
people around the town - they'll
give you some handy tips about the
game if you're a beginner. The lady
by the PokeCenter will talk about the
PokeMart, and will give you a free
Potion. You can't head west, so head
north to find your neighbour.

You'll eventually find him/her - talk
to them and you'll be challenged to
a battle. They will have chosen the
Pokemon that has the type
advantage over your own Pokemon
(ie: You chose Treecko, Neighbour
has Torchic. You chose Torchic,
Neighbour has Mudkip. You chose
Mudkip, neighbour has Treecko).
This should be an easy fight. Use
your Potions when your health gets
low.

Follow your neighbour back to Prof
Birch's lab, and Birch will give you
your very own Pokedex - a
comprehensive encyclopedia that
records information about the
Pokemon you've seen and caught. In
addition, you'll recieve 5 PokeBalls
to catch Pokemon with.

Petalburg City and Petalburg Wood
----------------------------------------------
When you try to leave Littleroot, your
Mom will come up to you and give
you Running Shoes. You can now
run by holding the B button and
pressing the direction pad. From
Littleroot, head north back to Oldale.
The photographer will now let you
pass, so head west from Oldale Town
and you'll end up in Petalburg City.

On the way you'll see two Berry
Plants - see our Berry Guide for

do. There's also a Potion near the
entrance to Petalburg City.
There's not much to do in Petalburg
City. Heal at the Pokemon Center
and buy any items you want from
the PokeMart, then head to the gym
and speak with your Dad. You'll be
introduced to Wally, and then you'll
see a tutorial about how to catch
Pokemon. You'll find out that your
Dad won't battle you until you have
four badges, so exit the Gym and
head west. Follow the path north
and head into the forest, Petalburg
Woods.

Head east past the patch of grass.
You'll see another patch of grass
with a clear square - examine it to
get a Potion, then exit to the path
by the south to grab a Pokeball on
the ledge. Reenter the woods and
head left and up, and follow the
path round. Eventually you'll meet a
man looking for a Shroomish, but
you'll be attacked by Team Magma
(If you're playing Ruby) or Team
Aqua (If you're playing Sapphire).
The Grunt has a Lv9 Poochyena, and
should be quite easy to beat. Keep
following the path and you'll reach
the exit.

Upon exiting Petalburg Woods, talk
to the kid on the left to get TM09 -
Bullet Seed, then head into the
building (The Pretty Petal Flower
Shop) to learn about Berries. Talk to
the girl at the back of the building
to recieve a Wailmer Pail, then to
the girl on the far right to receive a
random Berry. If you exit the shop
and go round the back, there's a
Potion, a hidden Pokeball and a
hidden Super Potion. Head east from
the building, and cross the bridge.
You'll see a pair of twins there who
will challenge you to a double
battle, where they pitch two
Pokemon against two of your
Pokemon simultaneously. Continue
over the bridge - an old lady to the
right will give you a Berry. If you
follow the fence that encircles
Rustboro City, you'll see an item ball
- it contains an X Defend. Finally,
head north and you'll be in
Rustboro City, at last.

Any grass, water and ground types
should be able to take out both of
Roxanne's Pokemon. Be weary of any
fire, flying and bug Pokemon that are
weak to Rock type moves. Roxanne
will also have an annoying tendency
to use a seemingly unlimited supply
of Potions to heal her Pokemon.
When you defeat Roxanne, she'll
give you the Stone Badge which
increases the Attack of your Pokemon
and allows you to use HM01 - Cut
outside of battle. You'll also receive
TM39 - Rock Tomb, which lowers the
opponent's speed.

Rusturf Tunnel
--------------------

Upon exiting the gym, you spot the
Team A/M Grunt being chased by
the Devon Worker. Now's your
chance to explore Rustboro. There's
a Pokemon School where you can
learn some basics if you don't
already know them, and various
people will give you advice on
playing the game. The most
important thing to do here is pick
up HM01 - Cut, obtained by talking
to the man in the house to the west
of the Pokemon Center. You may now
cut down small bushes providing a
Pokemon in your party knows how to
use Cut.

When you're done, head to the north
of Rustboro, and keep walking until
you find yourself on Route 115. Walk
round onto the sand and follow the
coastline - the item ball there has a
Super Potion. Return to Rustboro
and head east at the first
intersection - you'll find the Devon
Worker who will ask you for
assistance in recovering the Devon
Goods. Continue east past the
trainers picking up a Repel on the
way. Use Cut to access the area on
the ledge, and pick up an Ether as
well as any of those berries you may
want. Walk past the cave and up the
stairs onto the rocky ledge - there's
an X Special there. Head into the
cave to the east when you're ready.

It's all misty so it's difficult to
navigate. The item ball is a PokeBall
if you want it, but simply head up
and right where the Team A/M
Grunt is. You'll be fighting a lv11
Poochyena - once again, the battle
should be quite easy. Once you've
beaten it, you'll receive the Devon
Goods, and Mr Briney will rush in to
save Peecko, his Wingull. Since you
can't get past the rocks on the right,
head out of the cave and go back to
Rustboro City.
The Devon Worker will thank you by
giving you another Great Ball
(woohoo), but you'll be taken to the
Devon Corp Office Building to meet
the President. Here you'll receive
your very own PokeNavigator, or
PokeNav for short! It stores
information about other trainers, it
has a map of Hoenn, and can be
used to see your Pokemon's contest
traits. As well as that, you'll be
asked to take the Devon Goods to
Slateport City, and also be given a
Letter to give to Steven in Dewford
Town. Exit the building and head
towards Petalburg Woods.
You'll see your neighbour standing
near the southern exit of Rustboro
City - if you talk to him/her you'll
just hear about their progress with
their Pokedex. Continue on - there's
an X Accuracy behind a Cut bush
that you couldn't get earlier at the
end of the bridge. When you enter
Petalburg Woods, cut down the trees
to the right and talk to the girl
there - she'll give you a Miracle
Seed. There's also a Great Ball and X
Attack around the area. When you
exit the woods, go into the building
by the shore - that's Mr Briney's
Cottage. Talk to him and answer Yes
to his question, and he'll take you to
Dewford on his little boat!

Dewford Town
---------------------

A boy in the house by the dock will
give you a Silk Scarf. The man in red
and white by the gym will give you
an Old Rod if you answer Yes to his
question, and he'll also tell you the
new method of fishing. The boy
behind the PokeCenter rambles on
about a 'Trendy Phrase' - this phrase
affects Feebas' location; to find out
more see the Feebas Guide.
There's a cave to the northwest that
might help in defeating Brawly, so
you might want to check it out. It'll
be hard to advance without the use
of HM05 Flash, so that section will
be covered after you have beaten
Brawly.

You'll instantly notice that the gym
is pitch black when you enter, with
the exception of a small spotlight
shining on you. Each trainer you
beat will enlarge your vision circle.
Flying, Psychic and Ghost Pokemon
have the type advantage against
Fighting Pokemon, and Normal, Dark,
Rock and Steel Pokemon have the
disadvantage. This might be a little
tricky if your Pokemon aren't strong
enough - both Machop and Makuhita
know Bulk Up, and once they've used
that a few times, they'll be dishing
out heavy damage. Try some
defensive techniques to reduce
damage, or paralysis/sleep to disable
the opponent.


When you defeat Brawly, he'll give
you the Knuckle Badge which makes
all lv30 Pokemon and below obey
you, and allows the use of HM05 -
Flash outside of battle. You'll also
receive TM08 - Bulk Up, a very useful
move which raises Attack and
Defense simultaneously.

Granite Cave
-----------------

Enter the cave to the northwest of
town. Talk to the man inside to
receive HM05 - Flash, then proceed
down the ladder to the left (The
item there is an Escape Rope, very
useful). In the next level, you'll
need to use Flash by accessing it
through the Menu. You'll probably
notice a mud-slide that you can't
access - you'll need a Mach Bike for
that. There's a PokeBall to the south
of that, but just head to the next
ladder when you're done. Follow the
path - when you see a ledge with a
single grey stone on it, examine it to
receive an Everstone. Keep climbing
the ladders and you'll be on the
original level (with no more
darkness), but on the rocky ledge
above. Head left then down and to
the next screen. At last! Here's
Steven, you'll give him the Letter,
and in return he'll give you TM47 -
Steel Wing. Exit the room and head
immediately right off the jump-
ledges for a shortcut to the cave
entrance.

Now that you've finished your
errands in Dewford Town, you can
head to Slateport City. Talk to Mr
Briney and choose the second option
to head there.

Slateport City
------------------

You'll arrive on a beach full of
trainers. There's a beach house at
the northwest corner that will offer
you 6 Soda Pops if you defeat the
three trainers inside. Head north to
Slateport City when you're done.
There are three main attractions at
Slateport City. Firstly is the market,
which houses many traders selling
many different items. There are
vitamins, secret base decorations,
TMs, and much more. Secondly, the
name rater will let you change the
nickname of a Pokemon you caught.
Finally, the red house by the
Pokemon Center is home to Pokemon
Contests. See the Contest Guide for
more information.

Check out the markets and the
PokeMart for any items you want -
make sure you've got at least one
Harbor Mail. Also talk to the little
girl in the contest house for a
PokeBlock case - you'll need one for
later on. The man in the southwest
corner of the contest room will also
give you TM41 - Torment. Also check
out the brown tent to the south of
the Name Rater's House, that's the
Pokemon Fan Club. You can get
Scarfs for your Pokemon to enhance
their Coolness, Smartness, Beauty,
Toughness and Cuteness. The lady at
the back of the club will give you a
Soothe Bell if your Pokemon adores
you.

To proceed with the storyline, head
into the large warehouse with a boat
outside. Talk to the man by the
stairs; he will instruct you to look for
Captain Stern. Head back you and
you'll see that all the Aqua/Magma
members are no longer blocking the
Museum entrance, so go inside. Talk
to the member looking frantically
around the Museum, and he'll give
you TM46 - Thief. Head up the stairs
and talk to the man there - it's
Captain Stern. You'll give him the
Devon Goods, but Team A/M show
up to attack! Dispatch of them (They
have two Carvanha and one Zubat)
and then Stern will abruptly leave.
The A/M Grunts will no longer be
blocking the route north, so you can
head there now.

You'll find yourself at a junction. The
building in front of you is the Trick
House - a house where you must
solve puzzles and you will receive a
reward when you do so. If you head
west from the house, you'll find
some trainers (use Cut and you'll
get a Guard Spec and some berries).
You'll want to take the right path
though, that will lead you to
Mauville City. There's a Dire Hit on
the way. You'll also see your
neighbour, who will challenge you to
a battle. If you are victorious, you'll
win an Itemfinder. Keep following
the path and you'll reach Mauville
City.

--------------------

Firstly, on entering, head right and
pick up the Item Ball - it's an X
Speed. In the house to the north of
it, a man will give you HM06 - Rock
Smash. Then go into the house by
the PokeMart and trade your Harbor
Mail for a Coin Case. You can use
this to store Casino Coins that you
earn from playing the slots and
Wheel of Fortune at the Mauville
Casino. These coins can be used to
buy TMs and decorative Dolls.
Next, grab a bike from Rydel at his
Cycle Store on the northeastern
corner of town. Whichever you
choose, you can always come back to
exchange for the other one. The Acro
Bike allows you to jump over certain
platforms and rocks, the Mach Bike
allows you to speed over cracked
surfaces.
Finally, head to the Gym. You'll see
Wally outside - talk to him and he'll
challenge you to a battle (He has a
lv16 Ralts). When you beat him,
you'll be free to enter the gym

There are two sets of electric fences
blocking your path. The yellow
thunderbolts on the ground switch
these gates on and off, so you need
to find the order to get to Wattson -
the puzzle is quite easy, and you
should be there in no time. If you
have a Ground Pokemon with you,
the battle should be a breeze. Water
and Flying Pokemon should be
careful, as they are weak to electric
attacks. Like before, Wattson will be
dishing out Super Potions just as his
Pokemon's health gets to critical, so
finish them off quickly. Don't forget
Magnemite and Magneton are part
Steel, and are hence weak to
Fighting and Fire attacks as well.
Watch out for Voltorb's Selfdestruct,
and also for Sonicboom which always
deals 20 damage.

When you defeat Wattson, he'll give
you the Dynamo Badge which raises
the Speed of all your Pokemon,
allows the use of HM06 - Rock Smash
outside of battle. You'll also receive
TM34 - Shock Wave, which hits
regardless of the effect of accuracy
and evade modifiers.
